Botox is extremely versatile. You can opt to have muscle activity ‘relaxed’ to a greater or lesser extent which means you can ‘tune’ the treatment to get exactly the look you want.

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a popular medical treatment that has been tried and tested for over 40 years. The natural substance, essentially a muscle relaxant, was first used as a treatment for strabismus (squint of the eyes) in the 1970s. Further research in the 1980s and 1990s uncovered a number of other uses for Botox. Today, Botox is used to treat numerous medical conditions including a range of eye problems, muscle stiffness/spasms, migraines, neck pains, excess sweating, and even bladder issues. However, it is in the field of cosmetics that Botox has gained widespread public attention. Its ability to (in small doses) remove crow’s feet and other signs of ageing has not gone unnoticed.

A Botox treatment consists of tiny injections just under the skin with an optional local anesthetic cream applied beforehand to make the treatment virtually pain free.

Anti-Ageing with Botox

As we get older, our muscles have had a lot of use and start to wrinkle the overlying skin.

Botox is very effective in correcting wrinkles caused by muscle contractions. Administered through tiny intramuscular injections by a doctor, the medication works by preventing the treated muscles from contracting by temporarily blocking the nerve endings controlling those muscles. Most patients start to see an effect within 2 to 3 days and the effect usually lasts for about 3 months. The full effect usually sets in after 3 to 10 days.

As Botox is not a cure for old age, and symptoms gradually return as the medication wears off, patients often choose to renew the treatment 3 to 4 times a year to maintain a more youthful appearance.

  • Frown lines (vertical lines between the eyebrows) are treated by blocking the corrugator and procerus muscles in the central lower forehead.
  • Horizontal Forehead lines are treated by blocking the frontalis muscle in the upper and mid forehead.
  • Platysmal bands – the straps of muscle that extend down the neck from under the chin.
  • Lip lines – this usually gives a good effect but does not completely obliterate them. Other techniques, including filler, can be used if needed to get further correction.
  • Neck lift can be achieved with Botox and this is done by injecting the muscles that pull upwards and downwards on the neck line, these include platysmus, masseter and mentalis muscles. Chin line smoothing can also be further corrected with the use of fillers.
  • Bunnylines – horizontal lines at the bridge of the nose
  • Brow lift – A brow lift can also be achieved with Botox. This is done by blocking some of the fibres in the circular muscle, called orbicularis oculi muscle, either side of the eye and also blocking the glabellar muscle between the eyebrows.
  • Crow’s feet – the rays of lines spreading from the outside edge of each eye – are treated by injecting the lateral part of the orbicularis oculi muscle either side of the eye.
  • Chin puckering can also be treated by blocking the muscle in the chin – mentalis.
